College Station, Texas
In 1876 a college was born; Texas A&M (Agricultural and Mechanical) College was located in an isolated area to the southeast of Bryan. This campus was a oasis for young corp boys and so isolated that even professors and staff at the college were provided housing on campus. The postal service, in 1877, for lack of a better name dubbed the area "College Station" because it was where the train unloaded the college students. By 1844 the area had a population of 350 and two general stores. In 1920 A&M Consolidated School was formed to help the college train its teachers. College Station Independant School district is an excellent school system that has consistantly been highly ranked. In 1938 College Station incorporated. Since that time it has become a major player in drawing high tech genetics firms and research centers to the area. In fact, there is a movement on to nickname the area "Research Valley". |
