College Station, Texas in the Summertime
College Station, Texas home of Texas A&M University with a total student population of approximately 50,000 adds another approximately 10,000 students from the nearby Bryan Blinn College which automatically matriculates to Texas A&M with average grades and performance. What happens to this town of around 200,000 when classes aren't in session and 60,000 students aren't on the road? First realize that the typical four year program doesn't last four years any more. In talking with a Engineering student the other day they mentioned that their four year program included taking 15 credit hours the first semester and their advisor mentioned that taking over 10 was educational folly. Therefore we find more and more students taking summer courses. Also, many of our students are graduate students and don't fit your typical profile. Many of the students I place here in homes are over 40 and coming back for a change in career. I've got former government employees in the business school, former medical care administrators in vet school and current military personel persuing doctoral degrees. These don't fit the "typical" profile and don't "go home" at the end of the semester as Bryan and College Station are home. While some take summer courses others do go home and enjoy the break. It tends to be approximately half and half. May 10th was the official last day of graduation and most students were done with classes by May 5th. Some of the benefits we enjoy in living in a community geared for a much larger population that dwindles somewhat during Spring Break, Christmas break and summer break is the availability of restaurants. It's a pure joy to drive the non congested roads to a nearby restaurant that would typically have a two hour wait and saunter in. The restaurant staff is glad to see you and you will enjoy your visit quite a bit more. Another benefit is the availability of parking in the A&M garages. Take this time to park and stroll the grounds enjoying the museum and the renovations constantly taking place at our university. Many of us residents rarely go on campus as it's crowded and confusing to the uninitiated. Take time this summer to enjoy the sites and familiarize yourself with one of our jewels in College Stations crown. Visit today, August will be upon us before you know it! |
